Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 lb. bulk sweet Italian sausage
- 1 cup yellow onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Seasonings and Sauces
- 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
- 1 24-oz. jar marinara sauce
- 1 1/2 cups water
Pasta
- 8 lasagna noodles, uncooked and broken into roughly 2-3-inch pieces
Cheeses and Dairy
- 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese, divided
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella, divided
Herbs and Spices
- 1 tsp. dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup basil leaves, chopped
Instructions
- Cook the Meat and Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, Italian sausage, and chopped onion. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink and onions are translucent. Drain excess fat. Return skillet to stove.
- Sauté Garlic: Add minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked meat and onions. Cook for 2 minutes to release its aroma.
- Add Sauce and Noodles: Stir in Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, marinara sauce, water, and broken lasagna noodles. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Simmer Noodles: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook for 15 minutes, allowing noodles to soften and absorb flavors.
- Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the Parmesan cheese, dried parsley, salt, black pepper, and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Mix until well blended.
- Add Cheese Dollops and Finish Cooking: Dollop the cheese mixture evenly over the noodles in the skillet. Cover again and cook for an additional 5 minutes to warm the cheese through.
- Add Final Toppings and Serve: Uncover the skillet and sprinkle remaining shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, and chopped basil over the top. Serve immediately while hot and bubbly.
Notes
- This recipe is a fantastic weeknight dinner solution—only one skillet required and very little clean up.
- You can use mild or hot Italian sausage depending on your spice preference.
- For a richer flavor, try using fresh basil instead of dried parsley if available.
- Make sure to break the lasagna noodles into smaller pieces so they cook evenly in the skillet.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, reduce the water slightly or let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes at the end.
