Description

This Easy Skillet Stovetop Lasagna offers all the comforting flavors of traditional lasagna but with a quick and fuss-free cooking method using just one skillet on the stovetop. Ground beef, Italian sausage, creamy ricotta, and gooey mozzarella meld together in a rich marinara sauce with tender broken lasagna noodles, making it a perfect weeknight dinner that’s both satisfying and simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 lb. bulk sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 cup yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1 24-oz. jar marinara sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Pasta

  • 8 lasagna noodles, uncooked and broken into roughly 2-3-inch pieces

Cheeses and Dairy

  • 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella, divided

Herbs and Spices

  • 1 tsp. dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup basil leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat and Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, Italian sausage, and chopped onion. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink and onions are translucent. Drain excess fat. Return skillet to stove.
  2. Sauté Garlic: Add minced garlic to the skillet with the cooked meat and onions. Cook for 2 minutes to release its aroma.
  3. Add Sauce and Noodles: Stir in Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, marinara sauce, water, and broken lasagna noodles. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  4. Simmer Noodles: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook for 15 minutes, allowing noodles to soften and absorb flavors.
  5. Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the Parmesan cheese, dried parsley, salt, black pepper, and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Mix until well blended.
  6. Add Cheese Dollops and Finish Cooking: Dollop the cheese mixture evenly over the noodles in the skillet. Cover again and cook for an additional 5 minutes to warm the cheese through.
  7. Add Final Toppings and Serve: Uncover the skillet and sprinkle remaining shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, and chopped basil over the top. Serve immediately while hot and bubbly.

Notes

  • This recipe is a fantastic weeknight dinner solution—only one skillet required and very little clean up.
  • You can use mild or hot Italian sausage depending on your spice preference.
  • For a richer flavor, try using fresh basil instead of dried parsley if available.
  • Make sure to break the lasagna noodles into smaller pieces so they cook evenly in the skillet.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, reduce the water slightly or let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes at the end.
